Getting Started

The main points to consider when venturing into the world of keeping chickens are as follows:

* Decide what area you are going to dedicate to looking after the hens, and whether you are also going to allow the hens to free range around your garden (to avoid attacks from potential predators, this may be best when you are in the house!)

* Choose a breed

* Decide on the number of hens you want to keep. A good start up number is 3, but if you intend to get more then it is better to get them all at the same time than dealing with the issues of introducing others at a later date

* Decide the best type of housing/run etc to suit your garden and chosen breed, there are a number of options on the market

* Source a good supplier of hens, remember as with any pet, it is better to look at both the birds and how they have been kept to make sure that you are not disappointed

* Consider who will look after the hens when you are away (eg holidays); we offer a 'holiday home' service at Pear Tree Poultry if you cannot find someone responsible enough

* Consider attending a course prior to making a commitment. We offer a good basic introduction course where we provide lots of information that will help you make the right decisions. See Courses page for more details
