Volunteers & Work Experience
Pear Tree Poultry are happy to offer work experience to anyone interested in looking after animals and animal welfare. It may be that your academic course requires you to get specific 'hands-on' experience in a 'real' environment. This is particularly relevant to students on Animal Husbandry courses or Veterinary Practice. Or it may be that you are just interested in working with animals, and have time to spare and are enthusiastic.
We have had a few students on a Veterinary degree course, who have been able to complete their log-book, during out-of-term time. Our latest volunteer, Hannah, is just one example. She is currently studying at college with an aim to go onto University to obtain a degree in veterinary practice. She loves chickens, by the way, so, fingers crossed, she may choose poultry as a specialist animal. Our experience would suggest that finding vets that are knowledgable about poultry is very difficult. So she should do well.
We also have had a number of volunteers, who have been actively seeking employment working with animals, and we have been able to provide them with relevant experience which has improved their chances of gaining employment. One recent volunteer, Russell, found employment in the education section at Blackpool Zoo for spring and summer last year. We were pleased that he was succesful, and also pleased that he still kept in touch. He has just re-joined us recently, and is still keen to be involved in the future development of Pear Tree Poultry.
So you can see that voluntary work at Pear Tree Poultry, in particular, can provide a perfect stepping stone to a career working with animals.
